In The Domains of Dread, four settings are officially supported: Ravenloft (where the story takes place), Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms and Krynn. All settings are to be taken from their Third Edition sources if available, though any character may come from any time prior to the present day given in those sources.

For supported settings, their ideoligions are represented in The Domains of Dread. Any character, even from a supported setting, must represent a playable race with no diversions that would require adjusting NR or starting stats, eg drow. Subraces whose appearances and abilities broadly fall under the spectrum of their parent race such as moon elves from Forgotten Realms may be played as they are, but will receive no special adjustments.

Unsupported settings and homebrew (player-created) settings observe the same rules, seen below.

  1. Technology must not surpass the technology featured in The Domains of Dread, which is itself roughly equivalent to the early modern period with limited influences from the later Victorian period in a domain like Lamordia. That is to say, no setting should have technology in excess of discovering the steam engine, including complicated or developed steam-powered machinery or electricity.
  2. Any played race should be equivalent to a playable race featured in The Domains of Dread, even if they are fictionally named something else or have differing origins.
  3. Ontological concepts such as alignment must be represented in those settings: actions that are evil in The Domains of Dread should remain evil in that setting.
  4. Class archetypes should be represented in those settings, even if they are fictionally named something else or have differing origins. It is inadequate for a character from a homebrew or unsupported setting to have no connection to the class archetype chosen for them on The Domains of Dread.
  5. The conditions of a homebrew or unsupported setting should not be “worse” than on The Domains of Dread. Every Outlander should feel some amount of disconnect between their homeland and what they experience in The Domains of Dread, rather than seeing their Misting as an objective escape or improvement (subjective worldviews to the effect are acceptable).
  6. Characters worshiping an ideoligion from an unsupported or homebrew setting must use the same stats as an officially supported ideoligion. This should be disclosed during the application. At any time the Game Masters may decide another ideoligion's stats are more suitable for the ideoligion described as part of the acceptance process.
