Properties and Rentals
Multiple opportunities are presented to player characters in The Domains of Dread to answer the question of both short and long term housing options which exist in accessible portions of the game world. These opportunities are filtered through the lens of which major domain hosts the character, as all three between Barovia, Borca and Cordova have their own requirements and considerations.
Rentals
Two major types of property exist: long term and short term rentals, sublet to player characters by unaffiliated, third party non player character proprietors, each with their own duration of stay and renewal steps.
Long term rentals are leased 30 days IRT at a time, and are able to be postpaid 2 months in advance for a total of 90 days IRT. A prospective player character may have only 1 long term rental at a time across personae.
Short term rentals are leased 7 days IRT or 28 days IGT at a time. These accommodations may not be postpaid in advance. A prospective player character may have 1 short term rental per persona at a time.
Every rental, as above, is subleased to a player character by a non player character who is the proprietor of the property—put another way, their landlord. The proprietor is aware who has subleased the property and may be assumed to have access to that property if impelled by the domain authority or another force.
Therefore, rentals are not immune to investigation by other player characters or the world at large—to use an example exaggerated for emphasis, it would be unwise to conduct rituals in the name of profane powers in them as they would almost certainly be noticed by neighbors in all but the seediest areas. Nevertheless the infiltration of a locked rental in stealth or under false pretenses such as a disguise are hostile actions and may be reacted to as such if discovered. Before entering a locked property, any online Game Masters must be notified either using the chat channel or by opening a ticket in the Discord—if none are available within 5 minutes IRT, do not enter that property.
Rentals are subleased in the name of the currently selected persona, and may be interacted with through the proprietor only when the correct persona is selected. Having an active sublease prevents that persona from being renamed or otherwise deleted. Keys may be operated as normal regardless of the selected persona.
Using the !rental
, short alias !re
chat command will print to the system log various information about held rentals, such as their location, duration of stay, key number and the name and location of the proprietor. Keys are physical items which exist in the inventory—examining them will print the same information as though !rental
was invoked.
System messages will print to the system log upon log in when a rental is close to and after expiry. Keys do not vanish upon expiry, but they cease to unlock doors in the property.
For chat commands related to furnishing a rental, see Objects and Furniture in that article. All furniture placed is persistent, up to a placeable cap visible when placing or removing placeables. A character may elect another character that they can target as a decorator separate from transferring ownership of the rental by speaking to the proprietor of that rental. Decorators have access to all chat commands other than !clear
and !furniture
.
Obtaining a Rental
Barovia
Land in Barovia is owned by Count Strahd von Zarovich, who elects some aristocratic boyars to manage his holdings. Fortunately, the Count’s continued indifference to his subjects has left a plurality of grey areas from which proprietors may sublease rooms or entire buildings. Housing options as they appear in The Domains of Dread are in the city of Krezk and its outlying areas in Western Barovia.
Only those with Neutral or better NR may expect to sublease from a proprietor within the walls of Krezk; limited, less policed opportunities are available to those with Disfavored or worse NR in the Wet Ward outside these walls.
Borca
Land in Borca is owned by Ivana Boritsi, who variously disperses land to whichever vassals have her present, ever-capricious favor. This ramshackle structure permits countless “off the books” subleasing. Housing options as they appear in The Domains of Dread are in the city of Levkarest and its outlying areas in Eastern Borca.
Only those with Neutral or better NR may expect to sublease from a proprietor within the more upscale districts but, unlike Krezk, opportunities exist for those with Disfavored NR within the city proper albeit in less glamorous locations.
Cordova
Land in Cordova is owned by the Church of Law, who has her Adjudicators elect civilian governors actually charged with managing those holdings. Housing options as they appear in The Domains of Dread are in the city of Skyalis and its outlying areas in Western Cordova.
Legally, only Cordovan citizens may have long term rentals from a proprietor. This is a legal status separate from the NR spectrum. Any character who is native to Cordova or has immigrated such in the case of a Darkonian refugee may be assumed to already have this legal status—all others will have to secure citizenship through the domain’s requirements for naturalization. Short term opportunities are available in the city and elsewhere for those with Neutral NR or better.
